Here’s why I’ve chosen to do a DIWALI giveaway …

Nikki Parekh’s mum, Lalita, is a Gujarati speaking Indian and a Hindu. When she was groomed away from her family at the age of fifteen, it was her faith that kept the troubled girl going. She carried a very small Ganesh in her pocket in the hope that he would help her escape the life she had ended up in and bring her back to her family. Ganesh is the Hindu elephant God who removes obstacles.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of light and for Hindus, it is all about the story of Rama and Sita which is told beautifully using shadow puppets by a Yr 3 class

When Nikki was a little girl, Nikki’s mum used to allow her and her sister to chalk Rangoli patterns on the step of their terraced house in Bradford. Of course, this was only done when her father wasn’t around and after the girls had done their patterns, their mum had to scrub them away before, dad got back. She also lit candles the night before Diwali and told her daughters it was to welcom Rama and Sita back. The girls enjoyed hearing the Diwali story.

With my partner being Indian, we brought up our own children to celebrate many different festivals and special days : Eid, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Christmas, Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Burn’s Night, Hogmanay – any excuse for a party in the Mistry house!

Don’t forget to tell me what’s on your bucket list by leaving a comment below. Good Luck!

On my bucket list is go back to school to do a degree in creative writing but at 50 thatโ€™s way down my list but Iโ€™ve started doing a 16 week course through my local adult learning for creative writing so itโ€™s a small step forward

Sharron you’re a spring chicken at 50, you know. I started my MA in Creative writing at 52 and I’m now part way through a PhD in creative writing. Also, some Uni’s allow you to go straight onto the MA if you have evidence of being a capable writer. Maybe that would suit. Never give up on your dreams. Good luck in the giveaway xx

Yes, that would be a sight to see, Dave. I fear though, if we’re not careful it may soon prove to be an impossibility. xx

When I was at school, about 50 years ago, an English teacher, who was the most inspirational teacher I ever had, set us to write an essay about our bucket lists for the rest of our lives. It really inspired me – so much that over the years since I’ve achieved everything on it – with the exception of one thing, and that is to learn to play the Double Bass. I did dabble with violin for a while, but it didn’t have the rich, rounded sound that I was looking for.
So that’s my bucket list now, just the one item – learn to play the Double Bass.

What a wonderful ambition. I must say I too love the deep sound of the Double Bass, Jane. Good luck in the Giveaway xx

There are so many things on my bucket list that I would like to do, visit Niagora Falls as well as many places, but being single and disabled I am too scared to travel alone. I think I would like to see a grandchild from my youngest son and his wife, after they lost a child earlier this year, it would be a dream for me to see them with their own child.
